Best First Treatment For Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis

  • Do you have hip or knee osteoarthritis?
  • Are you preparing for hip or knee replacement surgery?
  • Would you prefer to avoid surgery? Or at least delay it?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then the GLA:D program is for you.

What is the GLA:D program?

Delivered by certified Physiotherapists and in-line with the latest research evidence, the GLA:D program combines exercise and education to help improve hip and knee osteoarthritis
pain/symptoms and improve your quality of life.

The GLA:D program is highly respected by Physiotherapists, Orthopaedic Surgeons and General Practitioners as it is an evidence-based treatment program that gets fantastic results for those living with hip and knee osteoarthritis.

Fundamentals of the GLA:D program

Please note that if group classes are not suitable, individual 1:1 classes are available if required

Initial appointment with the Physiotherapist

2 patient education sessions

12 group exercise sessions (twice a week for six weeks)

3 month review with your Physiotherapist

Completing questionnaires upon enrolment in the program then at 3 months and 12 months

Questionnaires help track changes in things like pain, function, quality of life, and medication use.

What is the best treatment for hip and knee OA?

The latest research shows that the best first line treatments for osteoarthritis are:

  • Education
  • Exercise
  • Weight control

Treatments such as pain medication, cortisone injections and surgery are considered second and third options and therefore considered as an adjunct or last resort to first line options.
For exercise to be most effective, you need:

  • The right type
  • At the right intensity
  • In the right amount

GLA:D Program Overview

Our GLA:D Program for Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis includes 2x education sessions and 12x group exercise sessions conducted over 6 weeks.

What results can you expect?

Australians who have undertaken the GLA:D program reported:

  • Reduction in pain (36% on average)
  • Reduction in analgesics consumption (1 in 3 stop pain medication)
  • Reduction in perceived need for surgery, or delayed the need for surgery
  • Meaningful improvement in joint confidence

Who is the GLA:D Program designed for?

The GLA:D program is specially designed for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA) and associated symptoms. If you’re finding it hard to get up from a chair, put on shoes and socks, walk long distances or experience joint pain and stiffness after a period of rest, this program could be perfect for you.

The GLA:D program has been shown to help people of all ages with mild, moderate and severe osteoarthritis by reducing pain, increasing mobility and enhancing quality of life. Often surgery such as joint replacement can be avoided.

You don’t need X-rays or imaging to diagnose OA and it has been shown that medical imaging is not a good predictor of your future outcome. Instead, a skilled physiotherapist will assess your risk factors (like age, genetic and lifestyle factors), symptoms, and physical findings to confirm the diagnosis.

At Physio Physique, we offer the GLA:D program in a fully equipped gym which allows us to deliver the program exactly as intended.

What is the cost of the program?

Please contact Physio Physique on (08) 8123 8252 for further information about pricing and session times. If you have private health insurance, you may be covered for a percentage of the cost. A GP referral is not required to participate in the GLA:D program.

*Please note, all participants will require an initial assessment prior to attending the group classes
